Will mail run on Memorial Day? Post office hours for Monday, May 29
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a time of remembrance for those who died in service to their country.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the holiday was officially proclaimed in 1868 to honor Union and Confederate soldiers and was expanded after World War I to honor those who died in all wars. It became an official federal holiday in 1971, known as Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day. Today, Memorial Day honors over 1 million men and women who have died in military service since the Civil War began in 1861.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday, meaning government offices are closed.
Mail does not run on Memorial Day so there will be no postal delivery on Monday, May 29th. Post offices will be closed.
Mail service will resume Tuesday and post offices will reopen.
Memorial Day is the fourth postal holiday of 2023. Previously, mail wasn’t delivered on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday and President’s Day. Upcoming postal holidays include Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day (Sept. 4), Columbus Day (Oct. 9), Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25).
