Will mail run on Labor Day? Is the Post Office open Monday, Sept. 2, 2024?

Labor Day is here and, for many people, it means a day off work and a celebration marking the unofficial end of summer.

While the day is meant to celebrate the role of organized labor in the U.S., many businesses and government services are closed on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 2, 2024). Among those who won’t be open for business is the U.S. Postal Service.

Post offices are closed Monday and mail will not run. Offices will reopen and service will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Labor Day is the seventh postal holiday of the year, following New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day and Independence Day. After Labor Day, there will be four more holidays on which USPS will close and mail service will be suspended:

  • Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 14
  • Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11
  • Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 28
  • Christmas Day on Wednesday, Dec. 25

While closed for Labor Day, USPS is already thinking about the winter. Last week, it announced two ceremonies for holiday-themed stamps. On Sept. 14, USPS will dedicate the Christmas Madonna and Child and Holiday Joy Stamps at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C. Then, on Sept. 19, dedication ceremonies will be held for the Hanukkah Forever Stamp at the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.
