Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones practiced with the Philadelphia Eagles for the first time on Wednesday. Does that give him enough time to get ready to play against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night?

When the Eagles signed Jones on Tuesday, the former Foley High School and Alabama star had been out of football since his final game of the 2022 season – the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 31-14 playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 16, when Jones had seven receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown.

At his Friday press conference, Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni was asked how careful he needed to be with Jones. The coach appeared to indicate the two-time first-team All-Pro would be on a pitch coach.

“You’re going to be tempted to want to put him in because he’s a phenomenal player who’s done a lot in this league,” Sirianni said. “But we’re going to have to make sure that we’re not putting him in danger. Doing what we need to do to help us win the game and doing what he needs to do to help us win the game, but also being smart with his rep count just because of the elevated risk of injury if you put him in for too much.”

In each of the past three seasons, Jones has missed seven games because of hamstring injuries.

“He’s looked good, so exciting when he’s out there,” Sirianni said. “And so we’re excited to have him.”

Philadelphia signed Jones after putting No. 3 wide receiver Quez Watkins on injured reserve.

The Eagles also had 1,000-yard receiver DeVonta Smith on their injury report this week. The former Alabama All-American didn’t practice on Wednesday because of a hamstring issue and returned to the field for limited work on Thursday, when he told reporters he’d be ready for Sunday night’s game. Philadelphia’s injury report listed Smith as a limited participant in Friday’s practice, too, but the wide receiver has not missed a game since joining the Eagles as the 10th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Eagles and Dolphins will square off at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. NBC will televise the game, which matches 5-1 teams.

The Eagles signed Jones for their practice squad. He will need to be elevated on Saturday to be eligible to play on Sunday. Each NFL team can elevate two practice-squad members to active status for each game.
