Will Alabama offers sway 2 young Mobile-area football prospects?

Alabama offered a pair of young Mobile-area football stars Wednesday.

Vigor 2025 offensive lineman Micah DeBose and St. Paul’s 2026 linebacker Anthony Jones both received offers from the Crimson Tide.

DeBose is already committed to Georgia. Jones is uncommitted but already has offers from Auburn, Colorado, Georgia and Georgia Tech among others.

“It’s a lot of pressure to put on someone that young, but the good thing is he has really three years to decide where he wants to go,” St. Paul’s head coach Ham Barnett said earlier this year about Jones’ offers. “I just told him and his dad to just enjoy it, stay humble through the process and God will take care of it.”

Who’s next: Top players in the class of 2024

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Jones helped St. Paul’s to the Class 6A quarterfinals in 2022, his first year as a varsity football player. He was named AL.com’s Coastal Newcomer of the Year after registering 130 tackles and 15 sacks for the Saints. He also caught three touchdown passes on offense and returned an interception for a score. He was a second-team All-State selection.

“Of the guys I’ve coached or seen, he looks a little like a C.J. Mosley, but he is probably going to be a lot bigger,” Barnett said of Jones. “He could be a jack outside linebacker or an inside backer. It just depends on how he fills out.”

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound DeBose committed to Georgia on Jan. 6. A first-team Class 5A All-State selection, DeBose graded 96 percent for the Wolves this season with 52 pancake blocks and 49 knockdowns.

Vigor coach Markus Cook has described DeBose as a “mauler.”

“He’s already big,” Cook said. “He has massive hands and wears size 16 shoes and 3X gloves. When he puts his hands on you, he’s got you. He’s aggressive. He’s a finisher and a good pass blocker. …. He is way ahead of his time.”

DeBose is No. 6 in the 247 composite rankings of top Alabama players in the Class of 2025. The current top five are Spain Park EDGE Jared Smith, Thompson DB Anquon Fegans, Charles Henderson EDGE Zion Grady, Saraland WR and reigning Mr. Football Ryan Williams (Alabama commit) and Southside-Selma WR Derick Smith.

The 2026 class rankings aren’t out yet.
