Will Alabama change its signs vs. Michigan after scandal? ‘Not really’

Alabama’s College Football Playoff opponent, Michigan, has been shrouded in controversy this season. The Wolverines were embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal that resulted in a three-week suspension for head coach Jim Harbaugh.

On Monday, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban was asked if he planned on changing UA’s signs for the Rose Bowl matchup.

“Not really,” Saban said. “We always change things up a little bit but we’re focused on what we have to do to get good execution and we’re not really concerned about any of that stuff.”

The Michigan scandal involved former Wolverine staffer Connor Stalions, who allegedly headed up a scheme, purchasing tickets to the games of future UM opponents. Stalions would then send others to the games in order to videotape the sidelines in order to steal signs.

While sign-stealing is a common practice in college football, using electronic means to do so is prohibited by rule. Michigan attempted to fight Harbaugh’s suspension in court, but eventually dropped the efforts.

One of the games Stalions allegedly purchased tickets for was the 2021 SEC championship game when Alabama faced Georgia. Saban was asked in October about his reaction to the scandal.

“I didn’t know anything about anybody coming to the SEC championship game or whatever,” Saban said on an SEC coaches teleconference. “I don’t have a lot of information or background on all this sign-stealing stuff. I’ve kind of focused on our team.

“But I know back in the old days when I was in the NFL, there was a time when you could send out scouts and scout a game, personnel and that type of thing. I don’t think it was geared towards sign stealing, but that was allowed. They changed that rule I think sometime back. We’ve never had that in college for a long, long time.”

Alabama and Michigan are scheduled to play Jan. 1 in Pasadena.
