‘Widespread power outages’ possible Friday in Alabama

It’s going to be really windy across Alabama starting overnight. Especially north Alabama, where a high wind warning has been issued for Friday by the National Weather Service in Huntsville.

“Widespread power outages” will be possible, according to forecasters.

Those are non-thunderstorm winds. All of Alabama will be under wind advisories on Friday as a cold front approaches the state from the west. The front could also bring some strong to severe storms. Those storms could also have wind gusts as high as 60 mph.

High wind warnings are not common across Alabama, Usually when they are issued its for inland areas when a landfalling tropical system is approaching.

The last time the weather service in Huntsville issued a high wind warning was just last year: March 30, 2022, when a round of severe weather was expected statewide.

Winds on Friday could be strong enough to topple tree limbs and knock out power in the rest of the state as well, forecasters warned.

But north Alabama could see some of the highest winds, with non-thunderstorm gusts potentially up to 60 mph, the weather service said.

The high wind warning will be in effect from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday. The counties in the warning are Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb and Cullman.

The National Weather Service said winds will be out of the south to southwest sustained at 30-40 mph with gusts of 50-60 mph possible. That’s tropical storm strength.

Forecasters said winds that strong could blow down trees and power lines and that “widespread power outages are expected.”

The weather service also cautioned that travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Forecasters also said to avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. “If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.”

All of the rest of Alabama will also be under wind advisories on Friday. Here’s a look at them:

Central Alabama: Wind advisory for all of central Alabama from midnight until 9 p.m. Friday. South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph will be possible.

Southwest Alabama: A wind advisory will be in effect for all of southwest Alabama from 3 a.m. until 3 p.m Friday. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph will be possible.

Southeast Alabama: A wind advisory will be in effect for all of southeast Alabama from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. Friday. The weather service said southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 to 50 mph are expected.
