Why was Jalen Milroe inconsistent for Alabama football? What Kalen DeBoer said

Jalen Milroe could be enigmatic throughout his Alabama football career. At times, the quarterback would win the Crimson Tide a game, like he did in 2024 against LSU.

Others, he would make the wrong decisions and the UA offense would stagnate, like in the Tide’s ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan. With Milroe now off to the NFL Draft, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked what caused the inconsistencies in the Texas native’s game during a Friday appearance on The Next Round Live.

“The thing with Jalen, I think a lot of it is, just like any other quarterback, it’s like, what’s going on around you too?” DeBoer said. “The quarterback is going to be the one that takes everything on. I tell our quarterbacks, a kid drops the ball, that’s on you, catch it for them. So just like everyone else, I’m putting it on the quarterback. It starts with you, you gotta make that ball even more catchable than it was, even though they just flat out dropped it. So there’s a level that Jalen had that’s a high ceiling.”

Milroe is in contention to be the third quarterback off the board, behind Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Milroe will be attending the draft, even though he might not be selected in the first round, something DeBoer said was partly to support teammates Tyler Booker and Jihaad Campbell.

DeBoer also explained how an NFL team could best make use of Milroe’s talents.

“I think tapping into that, taking advantage of his strengths, when he’s at his best and your team can flourish,” DeBoer said. “And then I think, just building everything around that skillset is, that are his strengths, and continuing to develop the things that he can improve on. He can spin it. There is no question. He can throw the football. And so now it’s just a matter of putting the right pieces around him, getting him in the comfortable moments, getting him in the groove, just like you would with any other quarterback.”

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25 through 27 and will be held in Green Bay.
