Why this NFL QB is marveling at Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama house

Kalen DeBoer is doing just fine as Alabama football’s coach. DeBoer is entering his second season of an $87 million contract, and the money evidently affords him a fairly nice home.

Speaking to reporters during Atlanta Falcons training camp, DeBoer’s former Washington quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., marveled at his old head coach’s current digs.

“He’s got a crazy house man,” Penix said. “The market in Alabama is crazy because his house is like way bigger than mine, and it cost less than mine. I’m like ‘Dang, that’s crazy.’ But he’s got a good gig over there.”

Penix spoke of spending time with DeBoer and some of his old Washington teammates. The Huskies went to the 2023 national championship game, with DeBoer and Penix leading the way.

“It was great to be with those guys,” Penix said. “Be around those guys. You know, obviously those guys played a big role in helping me get to this position and all my success in my football career. So it’s always good to be around those guys and spending time with them.”

After his final season at Washington, Penix was selected by the Falcon in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He took over for Kirk Cousins as Atlanta’s starter midway through his rookie year, and is the presumed starter for 2025 and beyond.

Meanwhile, DeBoer left Washington to replace the retired Nick Saban in January of 2024. He went 9-4 in his first year at Alabama, narrowly missing the College Football Playoff due to losses against Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

DeBoer and the Crimson Tide are scheduled to open his second year in charge with a trip to Tallahassee, facing Florida State on Aug. 30. Preparations will begin shortly, with Alabama’s preseason camp set to begin on July 30 in Tuscaloosa.
