It wasn’t the best day for Jalen Milroe against his home-state Texas Longhorns.

Alabama’s starting quarterback started 3-for-9 with an interception and threw his second pick at the start of the fourth quarter. With the Crimson Tide having four first-team throwers listed on its depth chart, there were whispers on social media and in the press box about how long Nick Saban was going to ride with Milroe.

Turns out, Saban pondered that same question.

“I did,” Saban said when asked if he considered a replacement after No. 3 Alabama’s 34-24 loss to No. 11 Texas. “But when (Milroe) put the drive together to go down the field and score when we got ahead, I thought that gave him a lot of confidence. But we never, ever discussed it. I can’t sit here and say the thought doesn’t come to mind for any player that’s having a difficult time.”

Following his second giveaway, Milroe led a five-play, 59-yard scoring drive that ended with a 49-yard catch and touchdown by Jermaine Burton. The pass cut Texas’ lead to three in the third quarter.

Milroe produced 299 total offensive yards (255 passing, 44 rushing) with two touchdowns. He completed 14 of 27 passes, but his pair of interceptions led to 10 Texas points and an eventual historic upset.

“Texas was a great team, great team as a whole. Great defense. Great sound defensive, aggressive, strong physical. So you gotta give it to them. You got to give it to them how great they were. They had a great gameplan that they had to approach this game. And they caused issues. We’re going to learn from it. We’re going to fix it.”

Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson each scored a touchdown late in the Tide’s 56-7 Week 1 win over Middle Tennessee State. Saban has repeated that Alabama’s quarterback competition isn’t over despite Milroe earning the majority of snaps through eight quarters.

Alabama travels to USF next week and should have an opportunity to correct the mistakes from the Texas game as well as play multiple throwers.
