Why Mobile wants visitors to pay more under first hotel tax in 21 years
Mobile city officials are poised to increase a tax on hotel rooms for the first time in 21 years under a plan to market a new commercial airport and help pay off debt for a new downtown arena.
The City Council could vote on Tuesday on a 2-percentage point increase in the city’s overall lodging tax rate. The increase would mark the first time the city’s overall lodging tax rate has been raised since December 2004, taking it from 14% to 16%.
