Why is Oregon over Alabama, Texas? CFP selection committee chair explains

When the College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday, Alabama football’s position didn’t change. The Crimson Tide remained in eighth, one spot behind Texas, joining No. 5 Washington and No. 6 Oregon outside of the playoff bubble.

Given that the Tide lost to the Longhorns, falling behind UT makes sense. However, keeping Oregon over UA has caused some controversy.

After the rankings were revealed, CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan was asked why the Ducks were ranked ahead of both Alabama and Texas.

“As we look at this as a committee, we continue to evaluate the play on the field,” Corrigan said. “We continue to evaluate the resume, as well as statistics. Texas has the win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa, which is a significant game overall this season as we look at that as well as Oregon continuing to play really well, their win over Utah and the balance of the top-5 offense and top-15 defense.”

The Oct. 28 victory over Utah was Oregon’s lone win over a currently-ranked opponent. The Ducks lost to Washington on Oct. 14.

Texas has four such victories, while Alabama has three.

“Looking at (Oregon’s) win over Utah, understanding that Texas has a win over Alabama, Alabama comes back with wins over Mississippi, Tennessee, LSU, but it’s a compilation of everything that I was talking about (previously),” Corrigan said. “It’s not one single metric, but we spent a lot of time on it, and we want to make sure we get it right.”

Corrigan was also asked about how the committee weighs a win like Texas’ victory over Alabama throughout the season.

“We’re going to look at everything,” Corrigan said. “Every game matters. You talk to any coach, they’re going to talk about every game mattering and winning matters, et cetera. The beauty of this committee to me is it’s not driven by watching games. It’s not driven specifically by the resume or by the metrics. We work really hard and take everything in. We work really hard to get everyone in the room to talk and make sure that they’re voicing their opinion

“Again, the coaches do carry maybe a little bit of extra weight when they’re talking about it and examples that they’ve had in their career, but Maalik Murphy had a good game this week for Texas. Jalen Milroe has continued to come on, and all credit to coach Saban and what they’ve done down there at Alabama.”

The Crimson Tide returns Saturday, with a chance to clinch the SEC West at Kentucky, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. CT. The game will be aired on ESPN.
