Why ice cream truck visited Alabama football practice Wednesday

As Alabama football practice wrapped up Wednesday, a familiar jingle began to play.

The one kids everywhere know. The one adults also have not forgotten, no matter how long it’s been since childhood.

The sound of the ice cream truck.

Late in the morning on Wednesday, the pulled up next to the practice field. Jingle after jingle played as practice ended around noon.

“Just rewarding us for working hard out here on the field,” wide receiver Germie Bernard explained.

With it being the first day in full pads, the timing was intentional. It was the sixth practice of preseason camp, in Alabama’s fine August heat.

Bernard had received a visit from an ice cream truck at practice before. He had a similar experience at Washington when he played for coach Kalen DeBoer in Seattle.

Bernard said DeBoer brought ice cream trucks, food trucks and “all different types of trucks” to practice at Washington.

“He’s bringing some of that over to here,” Bernard said.

It’s the latest new thing to happen in a preseason camp filled with them with DeBoer taking over for Nick Saban, who retired in January.

Count Bernard among those in support of the post-practice snack.

“Me personally, I love ice cream,” Bernard said. “I’m going to go out there after I’m done with this and get me a little some.”
