Why Donald Trump thinks Democrats ‘should be prosecuted’

President Donald Trump on Thursday called for the prosecutions of unnamed Democrats he claimed leaked information on Saturday’s strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities to the press.

“The Democrats are the ones who leaked the information on the PERFECT FLIGHT to the Nuclear Sites in Iran,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account Thursday afternoon. “They should be prosecuted!”

Trump did not name the Democrats he believed should face charges.

While House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Republican leader John Thune and the GOP chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee all were briefed before the action, their counterparts were not, according to the Associated Press.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer was given a perfunctory heads-up by the White House shortly before the strikes were made public. And House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries’ office received a “courtesy call” before Trump announced it.

The so-called Gang of Eight congressional and intelligence leaders were not notified before the mission, according to two people familiar with the situation and granted anonymity to discuss it.

On Wednesday, Trump began attacked media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, over reports challenging the efficacy of the strikes. The reports claimed the strikes heavily damaged but did not destroy the Fordow nuclear facility.

In his address to the nation on Saturday night, the president claimed the attacks involving bunker-busting bombs “were a spectacular military success.”

“Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated,” Trump said. “Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not. Future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier.”
