LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels went down with an injury in the fourth quarter of Alabama football’s 42-28 victory over the Tigers Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Daniel took a shot, that was called roughing the passer on the Crimson Tide’s Dallas Turner.

After a lengthy moment on the field being cared for by medical staff, after which time Garrett Nussmeier took over at QB for LSU, Daniels was back on the field. One play later, he re-exited and the CBS broadcast of the game said he was ruled out and was in concussion protocol.

After the game, LSU head coach Brian Kelly was asked how Daniels was able to enter the game after sustaining what Kelly described as a “head injury.”

“He was evaluated and was cleared and then came back and they looked at him again and felt like he wasn’t prepared to go back into the game and held him out of the game,” Kelly said. “Those are decisions that are made by our medical team.”

Daniels was playing an excellent game up until the injury. His ability to escape pressure had given Alabama’s defense fits and kept the Tigers in the game most of the way.

Afterward, Kelly was asked about his quarterback’s health going forward.

“He had a head injury,” Kelly said. “Was not able to come back. We’ll obviously have to put him through more testing before I can accurately say whether that was concussions, non-concussion, things of that nature.”

The play was not called as targeting on the field, which would have led to Turner’s ejection pending a review. Kelly said LSU had asked officials about the play.

“They said that the replay booth was reviewing it for targeting,” Kelly said. “Obviously I don’t have the ability to see that, but anytime that there is contact to the head or neck area, you’re thinking that there must be some form of targeting. They reviewed it, didn’t feel there was, so we moved on.”
