Why did Alabama play Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson but not Jalen Milroe?
Alabama football played two quarterbacks in Saturday’s 17-3 win over South Florida in Tampa. Taking over for Jalen Milroe, who got the nod against Middle Tennessee State and Texas, Tyler Buchner earned the start against the Bulls.
After he struggled, he was replaced by Ty Simpson. After the game, Saban was asked about his process for selecting the quarterbacks got to play and leaving Milroe on the bench.
“I think that’s an internal team thing,” Saban said. “I think that everybody has the opportunity to respond in the right way then things don’t go exactly like you want them to. We play the guys that practice the best all week long.”
Buchner struggled to compete passes after earning the start. He connected on just five of his 14 attempts, for a grand total of 34 yards.
Simpson spelled him late in the second quarter. The redshirt freshman finished the game with five completions on nine attempts, leading the team with 73 passing yards.
He had the Tide’s longest completion of the game, a 45-yard throw to tight end CJ Dippre.
UA running back Roydell Williams spoke about the quarterback situation after the game.
“Those guys all come in and compete each and every day,” Williams said. “Everybody knows what to do, so whoever we throw in, whether it’s an defensive player, offensive player, quarterback, no matter, everybody knows what to do and what needs to be done.”
The Crimson Tide will be back in action next Saturday, facing Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa to open SEC play.
