Why Cam Coleman was in a hurry to leave after Auburn football’s spring football game
When Auburn freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman walked into the media room at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday afternoon, he was greeted by a scrum of reporters who were eager to ask questions about his unofficial Auburn debut.
Coleman tallied 92 receiving yards on four catches and scored Auburn’s lone touchdown with a 34-yard catch from Payton Thorne.
However, members of Auburn’s communications staff warned that Coleman wouldn’t be able to take but a few questions. The reason being Coleman had a prior commitment that would require him to have to leave quick.
That prior commitment happened to be his high school prom.
“All black with a silver bow tie,” Coleman said when asked what he had laid out to wear to the prom.
Naturally, the next question was whether or not he had a date.
“A girl from my hometown,” Coleman affirmed.
Coleman having to hurry off to his Central-Phoenix City high school prom after appearing in the first spring game of his college career served as a reminder that Coleman, who was the prized gem of Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class, is just a rookie.
And after a performance like Saturday’s that reminder is needed. Because Coleman didn’t look the part of a rookie.
“I think he changes us,” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said after Saturday’s game. “He just thinks every ball is catchable.”
To Freeze’s point, two of Coleman’s catches during the spring game were acrobatic in nature as the former 5-star prospect had to fully layout for a 40-yard catch early in the game, followed by having to play through tight coverage to pick up a low pass for a touchdown.
“I know in this league, in the SEC, the DBs are not gonna just let you catch the ball all lackadaisical,” Coleman said. “You have to be aggressive when you catch the ball and just hold onto it.”
Chances are, after Saturday’s debut, Coleman will be a popular guy at tonight’s prom.
