Who won the battle of Auburn WR commits?
Auburn wide receiver commit Bryce Cain caught three touchdown passes Friday night as the Class 7A, No. 10 Hornets outscored Foley 51-44 in a Region 1 thriller.
Baker improved to 4-0 overall with the win, 2-0 in Region 1 play.
Foley, which lost its second straight, fell to 2-2, 0-2. The Lions are the defending region champs.
Friday’s game was a chance for a pair of Auburn commits to show out. Foley’s Perry Thompson made an acrobatic touchdown catch and finished with seven receptions for 58 yards. He also carried the ball four times for 31 yards.
However, the headliner for the Lions was once again Kolton Nero, who rushed for 276 yards and four scores on 27 carries. He also caught two passes for 24 yards. Sophomore QB Nelson Thompson was 14-of-19 for 169 yards and 2 TDs for Foley.
The two teams combined for more than 900 yards of total offense.
Foley led 41-36 after a Shaborn Oakes TD reception with 10 minutes left in the game, but Mississippi State QB commit Josh Flowers threw a pair of TD passes to give Baker the lead for good.
Flowers unofficially finished 12-of-17 for 345 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a score. Cain caught four passes — three for touchdowns — for 151 yards. Troy commit Kevin Beckham Jr. had a rushing and a receiving score. Rod Taylor rushed for 104 yards and a TD on 14 carries and caught two passes for 32 yards.
The Hornets will host Daphne (3-1, 2-0) in what should be another high-scoring Region 1 game next week. Foley is idle next week before traveling to Class 6A No. 1 Saraland on Sept. 29.
