Four players with Alabama football roots who were scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on March 13 didn’t get there. They signed contract extensions with their 2023 teams. The players who didn’t quite make it to free agency were:

· Las Vegas Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood)

· New England Patriots linebacker Anfernee Jennings (Dadeville, Alabama)

· Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith (Greenville)

· Jacksonville Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery, Auburn)

Outside linebacker Josh Allen (Abbeville) also was on course to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13, but the Jacksonville Jaguars used their franchise tag on him. That gives the team another four months to work out a contract with the pass-rusher.

Three players with Alabama football roots had fewer than four NFL seasons and an expiring contract on March 13, making them eligible to become restricted free agents.

Cornerback Mike Jackson (Spain Park) did become a restricted free agent when the Seattle Seahawks placed an original-round tender on him. In that circumstance, the Seahawks offered Jackson a $3.116 million contract for the 2024 season. If he can find a better offer, Seattle will have the opportunity to match it. If the Seahawks decline to do that, then they will receive a fifth-round draft choice from Jackson’s new team. Jackson was a fifth-round selection of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Defensive tackle Marlon Davidson (Greenville, Auburn) and running back Derrick Gore (Alabama) were not tendered by their 2023 teams (the Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders, respectively) and are now unrestricted free agents.

Seven other players from Alabama high schools and colleges became free agents by being released between the end of the 2023 season and the start of the NFL’s 2024 business year on March 13:

· Center Bradley Bozeman (Handley, Alabama) signed with the Los Angeles Chargers after being released by the Carolina Panthers.

· Cornerback Tony Brown (Alabama) signed with the Cleveland Browns after being released by the Indianapolis Colts.

· Safety Eddie Jackson (Alabama) remains unsigned after being released by the Chicago Bears.

· Cornerback Siran Neal (Eufaula, Jacksonville State) signed with the Miami Dolphins after being released by the Buffalo Bills.
