Who is the Week 5 Cunningham Bounds Coastal Player of the Week?
Defensive players took the top two spots in the Week 5 Cunningham Bounds Coastal Alabama Player of the Week poll.
Turner Tillman, a freshman linebacker/running back at St. Luke’s, got 53 percent of the 48,434 votes cast in the poll – 25,906 votes – to take the honors over senior linebacker Brayden Rivers of Citronelle.
Tillman had 11 solo tackles, two assists, a sack and two tackles for a loss and ran for 95 yards as the Wildcats edged J.U. Blacksher 12-8 to remain unbeaten on the season.
St. Luke’s is 5-0 for the first time in the program history. The Wildcats began play in 2010 and have made the postseason six times. St. Luke’s leads Class 2A, Region 1 with a 3-0 mark, with wins over Chickasaw (2-3,2-1), Washington County (1-3, 0-2) and Blacksher (3-2, 1-2).
The Wildcats step out of region play this week to travel to play 3-0 Leroy.
Brayden Rivers, a senior linebacker/running back at Citronelle, had 10 tackles and an interception in a 27-10 upset of Class 5A No. 5 Faith Academy to finish second in the poll.
Coastal Carolina commitment DJ Butler was third in the voting after running for 254 yards and three touchdowns in Davidson’s 42-10 win over Fairhope.
Voting for Cunningham Bounds Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 5, more than 74,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
