Who is running for Clay Schofield’s vacant Alabama Senate seat?

Three Republicans — two state representatives and a former county commissioner — have qualified for the Jan. 9 special election in the north Alabama’s state Senate District 9, according to the Alabama Republican Party.

The seat was held until last week by Clay Scofield, a Guntersville Republican and at the time Alabama’s Senate majority leader.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, no Democrat had qualified for the special election, according to that party.

State Rep. Brock Colvin, R-Albertville; State Rep. Wes Kitchens, R-Arab; and Stacy Lee George, a former two-term Morgan County Commissioner, will vie for the seat. All three men are Marshall County natives.

The special primary election is Jan. 9 and a runoff, if needed, is Feb. 6. The special general election is April 23.

The qualifying deadline for independent or minor party candidates is Jan. 9.
