Who is Mac McClung, the NBA slam dunk champion?
The NBA slam dunk contest was the coming out party for Mac McClung.
McClung left people speechless and on their feet Saturday after pumping a breath of fresh air into the event.
But who is the 6-foot-2 player wearing the Philadelphia 76ers?
Matthew ‘Mac’ McClung is a guard who signed a two-way contract with the 76ers on Feb. 14. He can play for the NBA team or the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats, where he’s been playing since leaving the Golden State Warriors.
McClung was the 2021-22 G League Rookie of the Year after finishing with 21.6 points, 7.6 assists, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in 27 games with the South Bay Lakers and Windy City Bulls.
McClung defeated New Orleans’ Trey Murphy III in the finals of the dunk contest, culminating an NBA All-Star Saturday that may have finally answered the question as to whether what used to be the league’s signature event can be glitzy again.
“I’m truly blessed and grateful for the NBA giving me this opportunity,” McClung said.
A 540-degree dunk — not a 360, a 540, him doing one-and-a-half rotations in the air — was his third perfect score of the night out of four dunks, but by the time the judges’ scores came up it was already decided. Everyone in the building knew he’d already won.
His is an unbelievable story: McClung has played mostly in the G League. Philadelphia would become his third NBA team, and he hasn’t even played for the 76ers yet. He played in one game last season for the Chicago Bulls, one other game for the Los Angeles Lakers.
He has three NBA baskets.
He had four dunks on Saturday night. A guy with more dunks than actual NBA field goals might have saved the dunk contest.
McClung is the first G League player to take part – and win – the dunk Contest.
McClung won an All-American high school dunk contest in 2018.
