Who is Bert Auburn? Watch Texas kickerâs NIL commercial with Alabamaâs Will Reichard
Yes, Auburn scored for Texas against Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night.
There’s a lot we need to unpack in that statement.
Bert Auburn is the Texas kicker, who connected on a 22-yard field Saturday to give the No. 11 Longhorns a 3-0 lead over Alabama. His last name certainly turns Crimson Tide fans’ heads because of the rivalry with that other school across the state.
He also has something in common with Alabama kicker Will Reichard, who hit a 44-yarder Saturday against Texas as a response to Auburn’s kick, as they star in a Goldman Sachs commercial. The spot calls on Congress to reauthorize the Small Business Administration, which is a federal agency that helps entrepreneurs “start, grow, expand or recover,” according to the SBA web site.
The Auburn and Reichard banter is about how unusual it is to see a commercial featuring a kicker. Auburn says kickers are overlooked.
Kickers “are the difference between winning and losing,” he said.
“It’s like small businesses,” Reichard said. “Without them, the economy would lose every time.”
Auburn’s a junior from Flower Mound, Texas, who was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list. He was 21-of-26 on field-goal attempts last season, including a go-ahead 49-yard field goal against Alabama last season.
In addition to his 80.8 percent accuracy on field goals, Auburn made all 55 of his extra point attempts during the 2022 season. His 2022 earned him honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.
