Who Brandon Miller thinks is GOAT is not who you think

Brandon Miller doesn’t consider Michael Jordan the greatest player in basketball history. That probably won’t be a factor when the team owned by Jordan, the Charlotte Hornets, makes the second selection in the NBA Draft on Thursday night.

The Alabama forward is expected to be the second or third player picked in the 77th NBA Draft, with the Hornets thought to be weighing him against NBA G League guard Scoot Henderson at No. 2.

Jordan and current Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James have become the choices when basketball fans debate the greatest player in the game’s history. But for Miller, neither is the answer to that question.

“I actually don’t think LeBron is the GOAT of basketball,” Miller said on Wednesday at a media day for the NBA Draft’s top prospects. “My GOAT of basketball is Paul George. I grew up watching him, so it was never just LeBron.”

A versatile 6-foot-8 wing, George earned his eighth selection for the NBA All-Star Game during the 2022-23 season, his 13th in the league.

A 6-9 forward, Miller met Jordan earlier this week when the Crimson Tide star visited Charlotte to work out for the Hornets.

“It was definitely exciting,” Miller said. “He’s Michael Jordan, the guy who jumped from the free-throw line, the shoes that we wear all the time.”

Asked about the advice that Jordan gave him, Miller said it was something he had heard previously.

“I think it’s just work ethic,” Miller said. “If you’re not going to work for anything, it’s not going to be given to you. I think that’s kind of the thing I kind of grew up just listening to. My parents put that over my head early.”

The NBA Draft will be held at 7 p.m. CDT Thursday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. ABC and ESPN will televise the event.

The SEC Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season, Miller would not make prediction about where he would be chosen.

“Two or three, I’ll be great,” Miller said.

The Portland Trail Blazers hold the third pick on Thursday night.
