Which position will Ryan Grubb focus on during practice as Alabama’s OC?
When Ryan Grubb took over as Alabama football’s offensive coordinator, he didn’t assume the quarterback coach role still occupied by Nick Sheridan. Sheridan, who held the OC job last season for the Crimson Tide while Grubb worked with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, remained on staff when Grubb joined up earlier this offseason.
On Monday, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked which position group Grubb might gravitate toward during practice. DeBoer said the new play-caller will still be working with the QBs, even without the title.
“I think coach Grubb will always still be involved with the quarterbacks,” DeBoer said. “I just am a strong believer that your play-caller has to be around the quarterbacks.”
Grubb could also help another position group. He started his coaching career working with offensive lines, and could continue to do so at Alabama.
Chris Kapilovic is UA’s current offensive line coach, and DeBoer said he could receive some help from Grubb.
“It allows him to just do what you want a coordinator to do, that’s oversee every position, and he certainly has a lot of history and background with the offensive line,” DeBoer said. “So I think there’s eyes that start in certain spots when you’re a coordinator beyond just the quarterback, and I think a lot of times his eyes, yeah, he can see it all.
“He can see them line up on the perimeter. But he also is really feeling and seeing and has an intuition on what’s going on up front on the offensive line. That’s really good with he and Coach Kap.”
Grubb has worked with DeBoer throughout his career, and had initially followed his boss from Washington when DeBoer replaced Nick Saban. However, he quickly reversed course and spent a season with the Seahawks, but was fired following the 2024 campaign.
Monday was Grubb’s first spring practice with the Crimson Tide. UA will continue spring ball through April 12, when it will play the A-Day game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
A-Day will not be televised, though admission remains free.
