Which jobs pay the most per hour in Birmingham?
The healthcare industry is big in Birmingham, and so are the paychecks in that field.
Each of the eight highest paying jobs in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area in 2022 was in the healthcare field, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Based on median hourly wages, the highest paid workers in the region were orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists and dermatologists. The BLS didn’t have exact dollar amounts for those fields, but median pay for each was greater than $115 per hour, or $239,000 per year. That means half the people in those jobs make more.

Unspecified physicians were fourth overall in median hourly wages at $106 per hour, followed by dentists at $105 per hour. Those five fields were the only ones where the median worker earned more than $100 per hour in the region.
Surgeons, including the orthopedic variety, and nurse anesthetists were more common in Birmingham than elsewhere in the nation, while also being among the most lucrative jobs in the city.
Two non-medical fields rounded out the top 10 – power distributors (No. 9, $64.77 per hour) and financial managers (No. 10, $64.55 per hour). Financial managers were by far the largest group in the top 10 jobs in Birmingham, with more than 2,100 in the field.
