Which Auburn football freshman will make an instant impact in 2025
Auburn football topped off its 2025 recruiting class by signing 3-star running back Omar Mabson II, out of Auburn high school.
With Auburn beginning spring practice on March 25 and A-Day set for April 12, Freeze and the staff will get its first look at the offseason acquisitions made in different positions.
Despite having another transfer portal window to finalize the roster, here are some true freshmen that can make an immediate impact this fall:
Malik Autry, DL
Measuring 6-foot-5, 320 pounds, Autry was the No. 31 overall player in the country and the No. 5 defensive lineman, according to 247Sports.
The highest rated recruit in the Tigers class, Autry had been committed to Auburn longer than any other player in the Tigers 2025 recruiting haul. During his senior season, Autry totaled 22 tackles, 16 quarterback hurries, six tackles for loss and two sacks, according to MaxPreps.
Auburn is going to be young on the interior defensive line with sophomore Malik Blocton possibly starting at tackle. With Quientrail Jamison-Travis and Western Kentucky transfer Dallas Walker IV also in the mix, Autry will have the opportunity to prove himself as a freshman like Blocton did a season ago.
Freshmen Four-stars Jourdin Crawford and Antonio Coleman will also be in the interior lineman rotation throughout the course of the season.
Deuce Knight, QB
Auburn’s quarterback room will look completely different in 2025 after losing all four quarterbacks from last season.
The Tigers signed five-star Deuce Knight adding on to transfer additions Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels. With Arnold expected to be the day one starter, Knight’s arrival as an early enrollee makes for a position battle leading up to the fall season.
Knight was committed to Notre Dame for several months before flipping to Auburn last October. In nine games at George County high last year, Knight passed for 2,082 yards and 24 touchdowns with five interceptions while also rushing for 450 yards and nine scores.
Knight was one of three 5-star prospects in Auburn’s 2025 signing class, along with Autry and Jared Smith.
Jared Smith, Edge
From veterans like Keldric Faulk and Keyron Crawford, five-star Jared Smith is entering the perfect situation this year with Auburn.
During his senior season at Thompson, Smith has tallied 83 tackles, 23 hurries, 21 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and one interception, helping lead the Warriors to the 7A state championship game.
Standing 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, Smith ranks as the No. 25 overall player and the second-best edge rusher in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.
Learning from Arguably the best player on Auburn’s defense in Faulk, Smith can possibly make the fastest leap into stardom out of out all Auburn incoming freshmen.
Blake Woodby, CB
Woodby was the 16th-ranked cornerback in the country and the third-ranked class of 2025 prospect in the state of Maryland.
After committing during Auburn’s Big Cat Weekend last summer, the four-star corner chose the Tigers over Maryland and Oregon.
The Tiger’s secondary is one of the strongest position groups entering the spring. The Tigers return the majority of their starters on defense, and much of the production late in the season came from its true freshmen.
As Woodby joins fellow 4-stars Devin Williams and Donovan Starr in the 2025 class, the Tigers have young depth to develop and lean back on for years to come.
Derick Smith, WR
In what may seem like a shock to some, Derick Smith might be the Tigers easter egg in this year’s recruiting class.
Smith, who ranks as the No. 2 athlete in the nation and the No. 7 2025 recruit in the state of Alabama, previously committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide last march.
Auburn flipped Smith away from his Alabama commitment following its annual Big Cat Weekend last July.
During his junior season at Southside Selma, Smith corralled in 46 receptions for 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns. He added another 1,036 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
Defensively, he finished with 74 total tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks and recovered three fumbles.
Smith and his brother Erick Smith will enroll in the summer just in time for fall camp. Being listed as an athlete will make Smith a versatile piece for the Tigers coaching staff to use in either the offense or special teams.
