Where will Tyler Steen play for the Eagles?

When the Philadelphia Eagles kick off their 2023 NFL preseason schedule on Saturday night, third-round rookie Tyler Steen is expected to get his first pro action. But at which position?

Steen played left offensive tackle for Alabama last season, but the only open spot on the Eagles’ offensive line is at right guard. During Philadelphia’s training camp, Steen got work at both positions.

“It can be challenging at times dealing with moving positions and stuff like that,” Steen said. “But it’s something that I think is really beneficial. …

“I feel like I’m someone that’s pretty versatile. I played across the line before, so it doesn’t really bother me that much. It’s been just a learning experience, so it’s been good.”

The offensive-line starters returning from Philadelphia’s NFC championship team are Jordan Mailata at left tackle, former Alabama standout Landon Dickerson at left guard, Jason Kelce at center and Lane Johnson at right tackle. Kelce and Johnson were first-team All-Pro selections last season, with Dickerson also earning Pro Bowl recognition.

The Eagles selected Cam Jurgens in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft to groom him as Kelce’s successor. But for now, Jurgens appears to be the frontrunner to fill the right-guard vacancy.

Philadelphia’s first depth chart of the preseason shows Jurgens as the starting right guard, with Steen as his backup.

“It’s so early right now,” Eagles offensive-line coach Jeff Stoutland said. “That’s the great part of this whole thing. We lost some good players last year that were here, so to me, to be able to find out the positional swing value of a player, to be able to do things now early before the stuff really starts is extremely value. You cannot wait. You know how we’ve done it around here. We don’t wait for that. We build our depth. We get our people where we need to have them, and then if something were to occur, we’re way ahead, we’re one step ahead.

“You saw today, you saw Steen play guard, you saw him play left tackle. You saw Cam play center, you saw him play right guard. That’s going to happen, and then as we go on, when we start getting closer, then we’ll hone in a little more.”

Stoutland said an offensive lineman who wasn’t a starter would have to show versatility to be among the eight kept active on game days.

Before joining Philadelphia, Steen said, he’d worked at guard “a little bit in college.”

“At the Senior Bowl, I played a little bit of guard, and in practice, every once in a while,” Steen said.

Steen noted the differences between playing guard and playing tackle during a recent press conference.

“I think landmarks is a big thing,” Steen said, “because at tackle you have more space out there, and at guard it’s a lot more constricted, so your landmarks on a run and a pass have to be a little more tighter when you’re playing at guard, and you got to make sure you don’t drift and overset because then they could beat you inside.

“Obviously, you’re dealing with people that are a lot bigger at guard inside, so just dealing with that, making sure you maintain your leverage and get lower and things like that. And also at guard things happen a little faster because they’re closer to the ball. At tackle, you get to kind of create space and see what’s going on before it happens, so those are just kind of like the subtle differences between guard and tackle.”

The Eagles open their three-game preseason schedule against the Baltimore Ravens at 6 p.m. CDT Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. NFL Network will televise the game.

“I always take the approach I want to get better every day,” Steen said. “That’s kind of what my approach is. I want to find ways to contribute to the team, so I’m really just making sure I’m getting into the playbook and understand what Coach Stout is teaching as far as the techniques and how we want to do each and every thing, so my focus is really to help contribute and get better every day.”
