Where is Auburn projected to play its bowl game after Iron Bowl loss

Auburn’s regular season is now complete after a 27-24 loss to No. 8 Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Auburn finished the year with two consecutive losses to end with a 6-6 records.

That means next up is figuring out where Auburn will play its bowl game. That will all happen this coming Sunday, Dec. 2.

That is college football’s effective selection Sunday. The four College Football Playoff teams will be selected first and then the remainder of the New Year’s Six bowl games. The Citrus Bowl then would take the next SEC team.

The SEC finished the year with nine bowl eligible teams: Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, Ole Miss, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Auburn. It seems likely three SEC teams — likely Georgia, Alabama and Missouri — will end up in Playoff or remaining New Year’s Six games. That would then slot Ole Miss into the Citrus Bowl and leave five remaining teams for the pool of six bowl games: ReliaQuest, Gator, Music City, Texas, Liberty and Mayo.

This likely scenario would ensure Auburn will not be making a return trip to the Birmingham Bowl, which is only filled out after the pool of six if there are any remaining SEC teams.

So where is Auburn projected at this point. Here are the main possibilities, according to national projections.

Texas Bowl: Dec. 27, 2023 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas

The Action Network’s projections by Brett McMurphy put Auburn in Houston against Oklahoma State. That has been his pick for about a month.

247Sports projects Auburn here against Oklahoma State.

Athlon Sports projects Auburn against Oklahoma State in Houston, too.

Music City Bowl: Dec. 30, 2023 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee

– Both ESPN projectors have Auburn slotted to Nashville. One pick has Auburn playing Northwestern, another has Auburn playing Wisconsin.

Mayo Bowl: Dec. 27, 2023 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina

– CBS Sports projects Auburn to play Duke here. Duke would be in an interesting opponent here with head coach Mike Elko reported to be taking the job at Texas A&M and an injury to quarterback Riley Leonard who grew up in Fairhope, Alabama.

The Sporting News projects Auburn to play Georgia Tech in Charlotte

Liberty Bowl

USA Today projects Auburn to play Texas Tech in the Liberty Bowl.
