Where do Kalen DeBoer, Hugh Freeze rank among college football’s highest-paid coaches?

Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Auburn’s Hugh Freeze are both among the Top 25 highest-paid coaches in college football this year, according to USA Today’s annual salary database published Wednesday.

DeBoer, in his first year after replacing Nick Saban, is tied for sixth nationally and third in the SEC with a salary of $10 million. Florida State’s Mike Norvell — who was also reportedly a candidate to replace Saban — also makes $10 million this year.

Freeze is further down the list at No. 25, pulling in $6.728 million this year. The second-year Auburn coach ranks 12th in the SEC.

With Saban retired, Georgia’s Kirby Smart is now No. 1 on the list with compensation of $13.282 million. He’s followed by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ($11.132M), Texas’ Steve Sarkisian ($10.6M), USC’s Lincoln Riley ($10.043M) and Ohio State’s Ryan Day ($10.021M).

Five other SEC coaches land at spots 8-12: LSU’s Brian Kelly ($9.975M), Kentucky’s Mark Stoops ($9.014M), with Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin, Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz and Tennessee’s Josh Heupel tied for 10th at $9 million.

Oklahoma’s Brent Venables ($8.152M) is 15th, with Florida’s Billy Napier ($7.37M) 21st and Texas A&M’s Mike Elko ($7M) just ahead of Freeze at 24th. Arkansas’ Sam Pittman is No. 32 ($6.498M), South Carolina’s Shane Beamer is No. 33 ($6.402M), Mississippi State’s Jeff Lebby is 50th ($4.25M) and Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea is 59th ($3.189M).

UAB’s Trent Dilfer is the highest-paid among the state’s Group of 5 coaches at $1.45 million, 77th overall. Jacksonville State’s Rich Rodriguez is 85th at $1.056 million, while Troy’s Gerad Parker is 96th at $900,000, and South Alabama’s Major Applewhite is 101st at $825,000.

The database also lists buyout figures as of Dec. 1, 2024. DeBoer has the second-highest buyout figure listed at $70.05 million, behind only Smart’s $118.083 million.

Freeze’s buyout is listed at $20.3 million. (Not that any of those three are in any danger of being fired).

Among coaches on the hotseat, Napier has a buyout figure of $26.7 million. Dilfer’s buyout is listed at $4.116 million.
