Where Alabama and Auburn rank among SEC’s most profitable basketball programs
Alabama men’s basketball brought in the fifth-most revenue among public SEC programs during the 2024 fiscal year. Auburn was one spot behind the Crimson Tide.
According to financial reports submitted by each school to the NCAA and obtained by AL.com via a series of open records requests, the Crimson Tide brought in $21.2 million during the fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024, meaning it counted the revenue from UA’s 2023-24 Final Four season.
Auburn brought in $21 million during the same period. Both schools lagged well behind Kentucky, which reported $33.2 million in men’s basketball revenue, first among the league’s programs, not counting Vanderbilt, which is private and not subject to open records requests.
Tennessee was second in the conference, bringing in $27.4 million. Texas ($23.2 million) and Arkansas ($22.7 million) also ranked ahead of the Tide and Tigers.
Mississippi State, at $9.2 million, was the only school in the league to report less than $10 million in men’s basketball revenue.
Auburn ranked fourth in the SEC in men’s basketball spending during FY 2024. The Tigers reported $15.8 million in expenses for the sport.
Alabama ranked two spots below AU, sixth in the league. The Tide reported spending $15.3 million during FY 2024.
Kentucky outspent the rest of the public SEC schools by more than $10 million. UK reported $30.3 million in men’s basketball expenses, with second-place Tennessee at $19.4 million.
South Carolina spent the least on the sport during FY 2024, reporting $9.9 million. The Gamecocks were the only program in the SEC to spend less than $10 million.
Kentucky led the league in both revenue and expenses, but tallying both together, it was nowhere near the highest surplus. Tallying both together, the Wildcats netted $2.8 million, ninth among the SEC’s public schools.
Alabama ranked third in that respect, with a nearly $6 million surplus. Auburn netted $5.3 million on men’s basketball during FY 2024, and was one spot lower than the Crimson Tide.
Tennessee had a higher surplus than anyone else in the conference, at nearly $8 million. The Volunteers were just ahead of Arkansas, which netted $7.7million, with Texas (also $7.7 million) the only other school with a larger surplus than Alabama or Auburn.
Four SEC programs lost money on men’s basketball in FY 2024. Texas A&M lost $2.2 the most at $2.2 million, with Mississippi State ($1.9 million), Ole Miss ($1.4 million) and Missouri ($746,838) also in the red.
