When will Alabama warm up after the winter storm? Here’s how cold it got across the state
Some in Alabama woke up to single-digit temperatures on Wednesday morning, and others had snow on the ground.
Mobile’s temperature fell as low as 11 degrees overnight, and the city measured 7.5 inches of snow on the ground on Tuesday.
One of the coldest spots overnight was Haleyville, which fell to 4 degrees between midnight and 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to data from the National Weather Service.
But a slow warming trend will get going today, according to forecasters.
There will still be cold days and nights to get through first, but by early next week Alabama should be back in the 50s and 60s again, according to forecasters.
How cold did it get this morning?
In a word, brutal. Here were the lowest temperatures from midnight until 6 a.m. Wednesday for several Alabama cities:
- Alexander City: 19 degrees
- Auburn: 12 degrees
- Birmingham: 10 degrees
- Decatur: 9 degrees
- Demopolis: 12 degrees
- Evergreen: 9 degrees
- Gadsden: 7 degrees
- Haleyville: 4 degrees
- Huntsville: 10 degrees
- Mobile: 11 degrees
- Montgomery: 15 degrees
- Muscle Shoals: 13 degrees
- Ozark: 16 degrees
- Prattville: 15 degrees
- Sylacauga: 14 degrees
- Talladega: 12 degrees
- Troy: 10 degrees
- Tuscaloosa: 12 degrees
Temperatures today will still be very chilly, but they should end up a few degrees higher than on Tuesday, when most of the state stayed below freezing all day. (Today’s expected highs are at the top of this post.)
However, the weather service forecast has Mobile’s high today at only 32 degrees, which won’t help to melt much snow and keep roads very hazardous.
Tonight will be very cold once again, but not quite as cold as this morning was for many areas. However, very cold temperatures are again expected in south Alabama, with lows expected to fall into the teens again. Teens will also be possible for much of the rest of the state, but they will be in the high teens for many instead of the low teens, if that’s any consolation.
Here are the expected low temperatures from tonight into Thursday morning:
The gradual warming trend will continue on Thursday, with most of the state expected to get into the 40s for highs.
Here’s the high temperature forecast for Thursday:
Lows on Thursday night into Friday morning will finally not fall into the teens but will still be very cold:
Temperatures will get a little warmer over the weekend, and parts of south Alabama could hit 60 degrees by Sunday, with 40s and 50s expected for the rest of the state. Here are Sunday’s expected high temperatures:
More warming is expected going into next week, with most of the state in the 50s and 60s by Tuesday, according to the weather service.
Is this warming only temporary? Maybe not.
The eight- to 14-day temperature outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has some good news. Near-average temperatures are expected for Alabama through the end of the month. And south Alabama has slightly increased probabilities of above-average temperatures:
The outlook for February also looks warmer, with a higher probability of above-average temperatures for the entire state over the course of the month:
