When is the inauguration? When will former President Trump take office?
Former president Donald Trump is headed back to the White House after winning a decisive victory Tuesday night.
The next major chapter in Trump’s return is Inauguration Day. The inauguration of Trump – the 45th and 47th president – is planned for Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Trump will take the oath of office around noon that day, vowing: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Trump will become president immediately after being sworn-in.
Trump becomes just the second person elected to serve two non-consecutive terms in the White House. The first was Grover Cleveland who is counted as the 22nd and 24th president of the U.S., serving from March 1885 – March 1889 then again from March 1893 to March 1897.
Vice President-elect JD Vance, R-Ohio, will take his own oath of office before Trump.
Vice presidents take the same oath as that of Congress members and other federal officials:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
