When do we change clocks back for end of daylight saving time 2023?

We’ve still got a few months before we must change the clocks back for the end of daylight saving time. But, if you’re one of those who like to plan ahead – or maybe just looking forward to cooler days – here’s what you will need to know about the end of daylight saving time in 2023.

Daylight saving time in 2023 will end on Sunday, Nov. 5.

At 2 a.m. on Nov. 5, most modern clocks automatically change back an hour (or will be set back before bed on the 4th for us old-fashioned folks), “falling back” to give us an extra hour of sleep that weekend. It will also allow there to be more light in the morning.

Daylight saving time will remain in place until 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024 and then end again at 2 a.m. on Sunday Nov. 3, 2024.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, DST was inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s “An Economical Project,” written in 1784.

“It was whimsical in tone, advocating laws to compel citizens to rise at the crack of dawn to save the expense of candlelight,” the website stated.

In the U.S., the switch to DST was first made during World War I to conserve fuel for the war effort. The law was repealed after the war ended but was reestablished by Congress during World War II due to energy consumption. The time change became law in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, establishing the start and end times within standard time zones. The policy, regulated by the Department of Transportation, aims to save energy, reduce traffic fatalities, and reduce crime.

DST isn’t observed in all states. Arizona and Hawaii do not participate in changing the clocks and efforts have been underway in at least 18 other states – including Alabama – to do away with the practice. Doing away with it entirely would take Congressional efforts, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
