What’s your favorite Riverchase Galleria memory? Shoppers reflect on past as Hoover plans for future

Cinnamon rolls, Christmastime, and celebrity encounters all come to mind for many when picturing Hoover’s Riverchase Galleria.

Following a recent announcement that the Galleria’s Macy’s location – the last one in Alabama – has been listed for sale, we asked residents ‘What are your favorite memories of the Riverchase Galleria?

Trips to Cindy’s Cinnamon Rolls was one of the most popular answers.

Donna Stack Wiggins fondly recalled weekend shopping trips with her mother and sister that culminated in buying one of the beloved treats for the ride home.

“Going there was like a mini day trip,” she wrote.

Hoover’s store is the only Cindy’s Cinnamon Rolls that remains in operation in the entire United States.

For others, a favorite memory involved the carousel in the center of the food court or the fountain there before it.

The mall — once called Alabama’s largest shopping attraction — has been a popular site for Christmas shopping since its opening in 1986.

“We drove down to Riverchase from Huntsville during the Christmas season that first year it opened,” wrote Rodney Gaskin. “Such a wonderful sight to see!”

One former mall worker jumped in to share his memories of holiday cheer at the Galleria.

“I worked there for 5 years at a call center, and I remember the wonderful Christmas music during the holiday season,” wrote Darryl Weatherspoon. “The Alabama Symphony Orchestra and chorus did a wonderful concert at the Riverchase Galleria.”

The mall has also seen a few celebrities over the last forty years, according to commentors.

Chris Moore said his favorite memory was “waiting on a popcorn order and running into the guitarist of my favorite band.”

“Kinda freaked me out,” he wrote. “He was killing time while waiting on their gear to be shipped ‘across the pond’.”

Stefanie Elliot Bamberg recalled “working at Mori Classics in high school and getting to meet a few celebrities that would come in.”
