What’s happening with the Alabama contestant on ‘MasterChef’?

Contestants on Season 13 of “MasterChef” have whipped up cakes, served lunch to firefighters, prepared dishes inspired by state fair food and more. Savannah “Sav” Miles, a farmer from Alabama, has been among them, and she made the top 14 this week on the FOX reality series.

Miles, 27, has been succeeding thus far on “MasterChef,” but viewers in her home state have caught only a few glimpses of her in the five episodes that have aired since her June 14 audition.

That’s disappointing for folks who were impressed by Miles during her audition, when she whipped up a fried chicken entrée that earned raves from the chefs evaluating her food. She’s one of 20 home cooks who’ve been competing on a “MasterChef” season themed as “United Flavors of America.” The winner will receive a trophy, kitchen gear and a $250,000 prize. Episodes were filmed in advance.

Miles has been safe in every challenge thus far, but hasn’t been featured yet as one of the top three or bottom three cooks on a specific episode. Those six contestants face the judges — Gordon Ramsay, Aaron Sanchez and Joe Bastianich — for on-camera evaluations of their dishes, and are typically showcased on the episodes as they prepare the food.

Miles is the co-owner of In the Pines Produce in Ballplay, a company she founded in 2021 with Cory Shands. In the Pines, linked to their farm in Etowah County, offers farm box subscriptions, sells produce to restaurants, organizes pop-up dinners and more. Miles would like to add a farm-to-table restaurant to the business, as she told the judges on “MasterChef” during her audition episode.

All of the home cooks on “MasterChef” have been on teams representing the South, Northeast, West and Midwest. Miles, a Gadsden native, is competing on the Southern team, of course, and all five contestants repping the South remain in the competition as of this week.

Other Southern cooks on Season 13 are Kendal Adair, a barbecue champ from Olive Branch, Mississippi; Reagan Sidney, a paralegal from New Orleans; Jennifer Maune, a lifestyle blogger from Little Rock, Arkansas; and Kolby Chandler, an entrepreneur from Houston, Texas.

Kolby is the son of Thornton Chandler, a former NFL tight end who played for the Crimson Tide in the 1980s. Kolby is no stranger to reality TV, competing on “Top Chef Amateurs” in 2021. He has more than 370,000 followers on Instagram, as well as a cookbook and line of seasonings.

In a recent Instagram post, Miles said all five cooks on the “MasterChef” Southern team participated in a catering event at a watch party in Maune’s hometown. “We’re hitting up everybody’s cities so stay tuned!” Miles said.

We’re likely to see more of Miles on “MasterChef” as the season progresses, and we’re rooting for her to make it to the finale. A total of 20 episodes will be on the agenda, if the series follows the blueprint it used in Season 12, and we’ll be halfway there on next week’s episode, which airs on Aug. 16.

On Episode 10, the contestants will prepare lunch for more than 100 children at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

If you watch: “MasterChef” airs Wednesdays at 7 p.m. CT on the FOX network. Episodes have been filmed in advance.
