What’s open on Thanksgiving? Drug stores, grocery stores, more

Oops. Forgot to buy the cranberry sauce. Don’t stress – there’s likely a store open on Thanksgiving Day.

Major retailers like Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kohl’s and more have closed on Thanksgiving Day in recent years, as have grocery chains like Publix and Aldi.

Those closures mean it can be a little harder to pick up any last-minute supplies you might need on Thanksgiving Day but you do have some options. As always, it’s best to call ahead just to make sure of a location’s hours.

Here’s a look at what’s open on Thanksgiving Day:

  • CVS – Some CVS stores will remain open. Check ahead.
  • Dollar General – Open regular hours, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Dollar Tree – Open 8 am.-5 p.m.
  • Family Dollar- Open 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Kroger – Stores open but may open late or close early. Call ahead
  • Rite Aid – Most open regular hours, check ahead
  • Sprout’s – Open 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Walgreens – The majority of Walgreens stores will be closed but 24-hour locations will remain open.
  • Whole Foods – 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

One notable retailer continuing its Thanksgiving tradition is Bass Pro Shop which will be open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Nov. 23.

Most gas stations will remain open as well as many national restaurant chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, though hours can be shortened.
