What to know about Auburn baseball’s adjusted series finale vs. Tennessee
After winning Game 1 and playing a thrilling nine innings in Game 2, Auburn baseball will have to wait until Sunday to have a chance at clinching the series.
Game 2 — which was already part of a doubleheader after Game 1 was moved to Saturday — was tied at four in the tenth inning before weather once again forced the teams to leave the field and pick back up the next day.
The contest is now set to resume at noon CT Sunday with Ike Irish at the plate for the Tigers in a 1-0 count. Game 3 will begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2 and will be seven innings. After winning Game 1, Auburn can win the series with a win in either game Sunday afternoon.
Game 1 between Auburn and Tennessee also had to be pushed to the next day, but was only in the first inning before the game was delayed and eventually moved to Saturday morning. Auburn won that game 6-1, as ace pitcher Sam Dutton was able to pitch six and two thirds innings after not taking the mound prior to the postponement on Friday.
The LSU transfer put together another dominant performance on the mound, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out eight Tennessee batters.
“Dutton has been so consistent for us,” head coach Butch Thompson said in a release. “Not only did he do another amazing job, but he got us into the seventh inning and what it allowed us to do was go straight to (Ryan) Hetzler. You have a chance to win at the end of the first game with Dutton and Hetzler throwing against a top-10 team and you do not walk a batter.”
Before being suspended, Game 2 was a back-and-forth contest, with Tennessee’s Dalton Bargo hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. That was an immediate response to Chase Fralick’s RBI single in the top of the ninth to give Auburn a 4-3 lead.
