What moves did Auburn football make in first week of the transfer portal window?
The transfer portal has officially been open for over a week and Auburn has been one of the most active teams in the country.
Five players have either officially signed or announced their commitment to Hugh Freeze and the Tigers, while two more have reportedly signed with Auburn.
The additions have come in numerous areas, helping Auburn retool its roster as it has lost over 30 players and counting from the 2024 roster.
Quarterbacks Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels, running back Durell Robinson, punter Hudson Kaak and safety Taye Seymore are the five who have made things official so far and reports have surfaced of Auburn signing former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Xavier Chaplin and former Miami (OH) corner Raion Strader.
Here’s a position-by-position breakdown of where Auburn stands after one week:
Quarterback
Certainly the biggest need for the Tigers going into the portal window, Auburn has already landed two of its top transfer targets at quarterback.
Arnold and Daniels were two names to watch for Auburn early on and both made decisions at the end of their visits to campus. The newest wrench thrown into Auburn’s plans at quarterback, though, is Walker White.
White was expected to be Auburn’s lone returner at the position after the departures of Payton Thorne, Holden Geriner and Hank Brown, but reports emerged Saturday of him planning to enter the transfer portal.
He hasn’t chosen a new school or made anything official yet, but if White leaves, Auburn would have to add another signal caller to get to the four-scholarship quarterback threshold Freeze wants.
Running back
Auburn added one running back transfer during Week 1 of the portal window, signing UConn transfer Durell Robinson.
He brings extra experience to the room with Jarquez Hunter out of eligibility. Robinson will likely be Auburn’s only transfer running back barring any changes to the roster and will join Damari Alston, Jeremiah Cobb and incoming freshman Alvin Henderson.
Wide receiver
Auburn has yet to add a receiver from the transfer portal, but the Tigers are in play for Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton Jr., who is ranked by On3 and 247Sports as the second-best player in the portal.
The Tigers made his top five along with Miami, LSU, Texas and Ole Miss. Singleton visited Auburn’s campus last week and the Tigers seem to be very much in play for the Georgia Tech transfer who has 1,468 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in his career so far.
Receiver isn’t a huge position of need with many of Auburn’s young players returning, but adding a proven Power Four starter only bolsters the offense for next season.
Another name to watch is LSU transfer CJ Daniels. He played under Freeze at Liberty and Auburn was in the mix for him last offseason. He visited last week and could also be in play.
Tight end
Tight end is another position of need for Auburn, but no moves have been made at the position yet.
Kentucky transfer Khamari Anderson and Elon transfer Cody Hardy are two names to watch at the moment, with both visiting Auburn last week. With Rivaldo Fairweather and Luke Deal out of eligibility and Micah Riley now at Texas A&M, Auburn could add multiple transfers at tight end.
Offensive line
Auburn reportedly made a huge move on the offensive line over the weekend, landing Chaplin from Virginia Tech, but neither Chaplin nor Auburn has officially announced the signing.
If he does end up coming, Auburn had a big weekend up front, pairing that news with Dillon Wade’s announcement to return for a final season. Wade played left tackle for most of last season, but Chaplin’s addition would allow him to move back inside to guard, a position he played at the beginning of the season.
Auburn will likely add more players on the offensive line, as multiple visited last week. Right now, Northwestern transfer Josh Thompson and Arizona transfer Wendell Moe Jr. seem to be the top targets.
Defensive line
Auburn will likely look to bolster its defensive line which has lost seven players so far between the transfer portal and eligibility running out.
Western Kentucky transfer Dallas Walker IV is the name currently trending most to land at Auburn as he visited campus last week, but he likely won’t be the only player the Tigers sign if he does transfer to Auburn.
Buck/Defensive end
With Jalen McLeod out of eligibility and Amaris Williams now planning to enter the transfer portal, Auburn has a hole to fill at the Buck linebacker spot.
Coastal Carolina transfer Clev Lubin visited campus last week and seems to be the top target at the moment. He tallied nine and a half sacks in 2024 and had the third-highest pass rush grade among Group of Five edge rushers, according to Pro Football Focus.
Linebacker
Linebacker is arguably Auburn’s biggest defensive need in the portal as Eugene Asante, Austin Keys and Dorian Mausi Jr. are all gone after the 2024 season.
Auburn hasn’t signed anyone at the position yet, but one name to watch is Fresno State transfer Phoenix Jackson. He visited over the weekend and had the third-highest coverage grade among linebackers in the country in 2024, according to PFF.
Cornerback
Corner is a position where Auburn already seems strong going into next season, but the reported addition of Strader would bolster the unit even more.
Strader was a first team All-MAC selection in 2024 and a freshman All-American in 2023, tallying 110 tackles, 29 pass deflections and three interceptions in two seasons.
If he does officially end up at Auburn, he’ll join a room that already returns its two starting corners in 2025.
Safety
Seymore announced his commitment to Auburn on Monday, adding experience and depth to a room that returns young contributors such as Kaleb Harris and Sylvester Smith. However, it did lose a lot of experience with the departure of Jerrin Thompson.
Seymore will join incoming freshmen Anquon Fegans and Eric Winters as newcomers to the room.
Special teams
Punter became a position of need for Auburn following the departures of both Oscar Chapman and Gabe Russo. The Tigers added Kaak, an Oklahoma State transfer, on Saturday, giving them experience and a ready-made starter at punter.
He’ll join incoming freshman punter John Alan McGuire at the position.
