Huntsville’s growing, but you want to know when a stretch of I-565 past the airport will grow wider. So what is the schedule for additional widening of I-565 east past the Huntsville International Airport?

Seth Burkett, the public information officer for the North Region of the Alabama Department of Transportation, said movement is imminent.

ALDOT is scheduled to take bids on the project early in 2024, he said.

”If it holds to current scheduling, the contract could be awarded by late winter,” Burkett wrote via email, “so, we might see construction starting in spring or early summer.”

The project will add two lanes (one in each direction) to approximately 4 miles of I-565, from west of County Line Road to east of Wall Triana Highway. Anticipated cost between $30 million and $35 million.
