What is Bryan Harsin’s buyout at Auburn?

Auburn announced Monday it is parting ways with football coach Bryan Harsin after the Tigers lost to Arkansas 41-27 over the weekend.

The loss drops Auburn below .500 for the first time since 2012.

With the news of a potential AD hiring looming at Auburn, the next question is how much will the Tigers own Harsin to buyout his contract?

Auburn fired Harsin less than two years into his six-year, $31.5 million contract.

Harsin was fired without cause before his contract expired. He’s now due 70 percent of the remaining value of his contract, which is roughly north of $15 million. The buyout decreased with every week that passes through the season.

Half of that buyout is due within 30 days of his termination.

Harsin signed his six-year, $31.5-million contract on Dec. 23, 2020.

The contract started at $5 million in 2021 and increased by $100,000 each year.

On Saturday, after the loss to Arkansas, Harsin’s job security continued to be a hot topic.

“I would hope no one’s happy about losing a game, simple as that,” Harsin said Saturday. “You put a lot of time and effort into preparing yourself. If it’s not painful when you lose, then you’ve got the wrong people.”

He said the only way to turn things around is in preparation and hard work.

“Losing can be contagious and that’s scary,” Harsin said.

On Monday, Auburn released the following statement:

“President Roberts made the decision after a thorough review and evaluation of all aspects of the football program,” the university said in a release. “Auburn will begin an immediate search for a coach that will return the Auburn program to a place where it is consistently competing at the highest levels and representing the winning tradition that is Auburn football.”
