What is a Gael? How Alabama’s March Madness opponent got its nickname
Alabama faces Saint Mary’s in the second round of the 2025 NCAA tournament on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland.
Saint Mary’s, a member of the West Coast Conference located in Moraga, Calif., near San Francisco. The school has one of the more unusual nicknames in college sports, the Gaels.
According to the school’s website, a Gael is “traditionally an Irish warrior, representing the power of passion and hard work, two qualities that run deep within each member of our student body.” As the story goes, the name was bestowed on the now-defunct Saint Mary’s football team in the 1920s by famed sports writer Grantland Rice due to the large number of Irish-American players on the team.
Saint Mary’s is the No. 7 seed in the NCAA East Region for March Madness, and sports a 29-5 record this season after beating Vanderbilt in the first round. No. 2 seed Alabama is 26-8 after defeating Robert Morris in Round 1.
Tip-off between Alabama and Saint Mary’s is set for 5:10 p.m. Central, with television coverage on TNT.
