What is ‘The Pacific’? The show Nick Saban said he and Miss Terry watch before bed

During Nick Saban’s weekly radio show “Hey Coach,” the Alabama football coach referenced a show he and his wife Terry are currently watching while talking about the importance of people who serve in the armed forces.

Saban even clued fans in on part of his daily routine. The coach said he and Miss Terry have lately been watching the popular 2010 HBO miniseries “The Pacific,” which he said he usually watches from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. before going to sleep.

Here’s more about why Saban referenced the show, plus more about the miniseries itself including what it’s about and where you can stream it right now…

What did Saban say about ‘The Pacific’?

It began when the show’s media guest, CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell, asked Saban what he considered “the greatest reward” he gets as head coach, other than the championships and other on-field success. He answered his relationships with the players and the role he plays in helping them be more successful in life.

The show’s host Eli Gold mentioned the community work Saban and the football team did in the aftermath of the 2011 tornado in Tuscaloosa. “You became far more than just a football coach,” Gold said. “You became a community leader in that experience, at least as far as my eyes saw it.”

Saban said that while he works in a competitive business, “but sometimes things are just about people. It doesn’t matter what those people do, who they root for, what their disposition is, what their circumstance is in life. But sometimes you can support and help, and that presence that you have to be able to do that is really, really important.”

He said that earlier that day he was asked about the importance of veterans before mentioning the show, which was recently part of his and Miss Terry’s bedtime routine after a long day at the office. “Terry and I just watched ‘The Pacific,’” Saban said. “I watch one episode at 10 to 11, and then I go to bed at 11, and it lasts for however many episodes there are, 10 days or whatever. But to have gratitude for what all those people have done so we have the quality of life that we have? You can’t even put it into words. And, you know, so many people can impact and influence other people by the sacrifices that they make, that to show that appreciation sometimes is, I think, really necessary.”

What is ‘The Pacific’ about?

From the producers of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning 2001 HBO miniseries ‘Band of Brothers’ comes this epic 10-part miniseries that tells the true stories of three Marines fighting in the brutal Pacific theater during World War II. The show is a companion piece to “Band of Brothers.”

While “Band of Brothers” followed the Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Europe, “The Pacific” focuses on three Marines who were in different regiments (1st, 5th, and 7th, respectively) of the 1st Marine Division.

It depicts the 1st Marine Division’s battles in the Pacific like Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Who’s in it?

The talented ensemble cast features an array of familiar faces including the show’s lead James Badge Dale, known for his work in “The Departed,” “Iron Man 3″ and “13 Hours.” It also stars Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Joseph Mazzello (“Jurassic Park”), William Sadler (“The Shawshank Redemption,” Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”) and many others.

Who made it?

Similar to “Band of Brothers” nearly a decade prior, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks (along with Hanks’ frequent collaborator Gary Goetzman) produced the show. It was also spearheaded by Bruce C. McKenna (a co-executive producer), who worked as one of the main writers on “Band of Brothers.” Hugh Ambrose, the son of “Band of Brothers” author Stephen Ambrose, served as a project consultant. Talented filmmakers like Tim Van Patten, David Nutter, Jeremy Podeswa, Graham Yost, Carl Franklin and Tony To took turns directing the episodes.

What did critics say?

“The Pacific” has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus says, “An honest, albeit horrifying, exploration of World War II, The Pacific is a visually stunning miniseries not for the faint of heart.”

Can I stream it?

Yes. In fact, you can find it on two major streamers, including Max because the show originally premiered on HBO back in 2010. You can also stream the show on Netflix. All 10 episodes are available on the services.

What else does Saban like to watch?

Throughout his years in Tuscaloosa, the coach has often referenced films he personally enjoys as motivating tools, many of which he shares with his players.

During an episode of his radio show the week of the Alabama-LSU game in 2013, Saban fielded a question from an AL.com reader asking which movies he specifically likes to show his teams. Saban shared his then-current top five.

“The players really like ‘Cinderella Man, they like ‘Seabiscuit,’ they like ‘Secretariat,’ they like ‘Gladiator,’ and Tom Cruise being the samurai soldier, ‘The Last Samurai,’” Saban said. “That’s kind of the go-to five.”

“The thing about it is…you’ve got to wait about five years until everybody graduates,” Saban said, noting showing the same movies over and over could get a little old for the players. “Once you’ve seen them, you can’t show them over and over.”
