What does Birmingham want? Popular chains or local businesses?
Birmingham residents are looking to add a little European flair to their homes according to local Facebook groups. Throughout January requests to bring an IKEA furniture store into the city were among the most popular.
City officials are a bit reticent to talk about in-the-works possible deals for bringing new businesses to Birmingham. Cornell Wesley, director of Birmingham’s Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity (IEO), he cannot announce any businesses that may be coming to the city due ongoing company negotiations – at this time.
But residents on local social media are glad to weigh in on their wish lists.
One commentor, Ed Goldfluss, expressed hope on Facebook group I Believe in Birmingham that IKEA’s 2019 land purchase in Lowndes County could mean a store location for the state. But IKEA eventually announced that the 25,000 acres was actually part of a sustainability investment by the company, according to an article by AL.com’s William Thornton.
Along with requests for the internationally popular Swedish furniture chain, Facebook comments have also been flooded with requests for Dillard’s and Nordstrom clothing stores and casual Mexican restaurant Torchy’s Tacos.
