What do Texas and Oklahoma bring to the SEC?
Oklahoma and Texas are now officially members of the Southeastern Conference, having bolted from the Big 12 to create a 16-team football powerhouse.
But the Sooners and Longhorns bring more to the table than just football. Each is a flagship school in its state, with a broad-based athletic program that’s successful in a number of different sports.
Here’s a quick look at each:
Oklahoma football
The Sooners are on the short list of true bluebloods in college football, standing alongside the likes of Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame in terms of historical success and prestige. Oklahoma has seven national championships (more than anyone in the SEC other than Alabama), 50 conference championships and won an NCAA Division I record 47 consecutive games from 1953-57.
The Sooners are fourth nationally in bowl appearances (57) and tied for fourth in bowl victories (31). Only Alabama, Georgia and Texas among SEC schools can best or compare with Oklahoma in postseason trips and wins.
The Sooners have had seven Heisman Trophy winners, more than anyone in the SEC, and second behind only USC’s eight. Oklahoma has placed 23 players and six head coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Oklahoma has had success of late, with 10 wins in 2023 and only one losing season (a 6-7 mark in 2022) in the 21st century. Only Wisconsin and Ohio State can also make the latter claim among power conference schools.
The Sooners have made four appearances in the College Football Playoff, including three straight trips from 2017-19. That’s fourth-most among all programs, behind Alabama (8), Clemson (6) and Ohio State (5).
The 2024 Oklahoma team is likely to be ranked somewhere in the Top 25, though it must replace quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who transferred to Oregon. Sophomore Jackson Arnold, a former five-star recruit, takes over under center this season after playing part-time in 2023.
Oklahoma in other sports
In baseball, the Sooners have won a pair of national championships (1951 and 1994) and were College World Series runner-up to Ole Miss in 2022. Overall, Oklahoma has been to Omaha 11 times.
In men’s basketball, Oklahoma has reached the Final Four five times — most recently in 2016. The Sooners were national runner-up in both 1947 and 1988.
The Sooners’ women’s basketball program has been to three consecutive NCAA tournaments, with three trips to the Final Four. The Sooners were national runner-up in 2002.
In women’s gymnastics, Oklahoma has six national championships, including back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Men’s golf won national titles in 1989 and 2017.
But it is in softball that the Sooners have become the dominant program nationally. Oklahoma has won four consecutive national championships (and eight overall) and won 53 consecutive games in 2023.
Texas football
The Longhorns are tied for fourth with Notre Dame in all-time wins in college football, and behind only Michigan, Alabama and Ohio State. However, they have not had as much postseason success, at least not recently.
Texas has four national championships, but only one since 1970. That came in 2005 under Mack Brown.
The Longhorns have made just one College Football Playoff appearance, that of course coming in 2023. They also, amazingly, have just two Heisman Trophy winners — Earl Campbell in 1977 and Ricky Williams in 1998.
Texas dominated the Southwest Conference, but was not quite as much of a juggernaut in the Big 12. The Longhorns won four Big 12 titles, including 2023.
What the Longhorns do offer is a strong history with a couple of other current SEC schools that once played in the SWC. Those are of course in-state rival Texas A&M, as well as Arkansas.
The 2024 Texas team is viewed by many as a national championship contender after reaching the title game a year ago. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returns to lead what should be one of the most-explosive offense in the country.
Texas in other sports
The Longhorns have a reasonably good history in men’s basketball, though they haven’t won a national championship since 1933 and haven’t reached a Final Four since 2003. Texas has four straight trips to the NCAA tournament, including an Elite Eight berth in 2023.
In women’s basketball, the Longhorns have made the NCAA tournament every year since 2014, with trips to the Elite Eight in 2016, 2021, 2022 and 2024. Texas’ lone national championship came in 1986.
Texas’ baseball program is the winningest in NCAA history in terms of percentage, and has six national championships (the most-recent in 2005). The Longhorns made back-to-back trips to Omaha for the College World Series in 2021 and 2022.
The Texas softball program has been among the best in the country in recent years, but has been unable to overcome Oklahoma. The Longhorns were national runners-up in 2022 and 2024 and won the Big 12 regular-season title this past season.
Texas men’s golf has won four national championships, most recently in 2022. The Longhorns women’s golf team has never won the national championship, but has eight consecutive tournament berths and three NCAA match play titles.
Texas also has fairly recent national championships in men’s tennis (2019), women’s tennis (2021 and 2022), women’s volleyball (2022 and 2023), men’s swimming & diving (2021) and women’s outdoor track & field (2023). The women’s rowing team also won NCAA titles in 2021, 2022 and 2024.
