Huntsville may be known as the Rocket City with the presence of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, but rocket scientists are not the highest paid people in the city.
Not all websites ranking top paying jobs agree on what the highest paid position is. Stacker.com ranks family physicians at the top, while ZipRecruiter says it’s certified nursing anesthetists. But most agree the highest paid salaries in town belong to the medical field.
Aerospace engineers rank only 24th, according to Stacker.
What isn’t in dispute is that Huntsville metro workers are the highest paid in the state. According to the Alabama Department of Labor, Huntsville metro workers made 1,339.77 a week, or $38.61 an hour. The average pay in Birmingham was 1,105.54 a week or $31.80 an hour. Mobile workers made an average of 1,011.05 a week, or$27.70 an hour.
They were the only three metros in the state where workers made more than $1,000 a week.
Stacker bases its rankings on data from the I.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Here are the highest paid jobs in Huntsville, according to Stacker.com:
#1. Family medicine physicians
They make an annual salary of $267,810, which is No. 65 among the highest paid nationally among metropolitan areas. The national mean salary is $235,930.
#2. Chief executives
They make an annual mean salary of $193,750, which is No. 173 among all metros nationally. The national average mean salary is $213,020.
#3. Dentists
Their annual mean salary is $173,190, which ranks No. 133 nationally. The national annual mean salary is $167,160.
#4. Nurse anesthetists
They have an annual mean salary of $172,840, ranking 91st among metros. The national annual mean salary is $202,470.
#5. Psychiatrists
They make an annual mean salary of $168,790, which ranks 97th among metros. The national mean salary is $249,760.
#6. Architectural and engineering managers
They make an annual mean salary of $151,320, which ranks 87th among metros. The national annual mean salary is $158,970.
#7. Marketing managers
They make an annual mean salary of $148,970, which is 41st among metros. The national annual mean salary is $153,440.
#8. Computer and information systems managers
They make an annual mean salary of $141,310, which is 103rd of all metros. The national annual mean salary is $162,930.
#9. Natural sciences managers
They make an annual mean salary of $141,110, which ranks 41st among all metros. The national annual mean salary is $156,110
#10. Financial managers
They make an annual mean salary of $137,470, which is 125th among all metros. The national annual mean salary is $153,460.
Rounding out the ZipRecruiter top 10 include pediatricians, nurse practitioners, scrum masters, non-clinal RNs, engineers, cyber security personnel, physical therapists, outpatient clinic RNs and attorneys.
There are currently 15,000-18,000 job openings in the Huntsville area according to job search websites such as ZipRecruiter and Indeed.
