What Alabama players think of Ryan Grubb after 2 spring football practices
Newly minted Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb had one word come to mind when asked about his play calling philosophy with Alabama football in 2025.
“Aggressive,” Grubb told reporters Wednesday. “We’re gonna be aggressive.”
Grubb takes over as Alabama’s offensive coordinator after a season with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. He originally planned to be in Tuscaloosa for the 2024 season, following Kalen DeBoer from Washington, before taking the Seahawks job.
Alabama’s players met him briefly last offseason, but after two days of spring practice, he’s earning rave reviews.
“We all love him,” Crimson Tide running back Jam Miller said. “Last year he came in and he ended up leaving of course, but now we know him like he’s been here for a minute, so right now we’re just working and getting better.”
Several Alabama players have played for Grubb before. Germie Bernard followed DeBoer and Grubb from Washington, where he was a member of the 2023 Huskie team that went to the national championship games before transferring to Alabama.
Bernard was optimistic about what the future could look like in Tuscaloosa with Grubb in place.
“Just being able to be in the offense that he has, as we all saw in 2023, it’s very explosive,” Bernard said. “Just to be able to have that system back, and especially with the guys that we have, I know that we’ll be able to recreate some good things.”
Grubb coached Bernard for one season at Washington after transferring in from Michigan State. The wideout described his coach’s style when dealing with players.
“He just wants the best out of everybody, so he just coaches everybody hard,” Grubb said. “And then, most importantly, he’s just aggressive with the way that he calls plays, he’s not afraid to take any chances, take any shots.”
Alabama will continue spring practice on Friday. Spring ball is set to run through April 12, when the Crimson Tide will play the A-Day game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
A-Day will not be televised this season, but admission will be free.
