West Morgan QB Braxton Peters throws 4 TD passes in win over Randolph

Braxton Peters threw a touchdown pass in every quarter as West Morgan dominated host Randolph 41-20 at SportsMed Field in a showdown between Class 4A teams with expectations of advancing deep in the playoffs.

Peters connected with wide receiver Ti’arrius Mosley on scoring passes of 41, 36 and 49 yards as the Rebels built a 21-point lead entering the fourth quarter. The senior quarterback capped off West Morgan’s scoring with a 6-yard TD toss to Harrison Johnson in the fourth, finishing off a 16-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock.

Jalen Fletcher, a second-team Class 4A All-State selection in 2022, ran 18 times for 101 yards and scored West Morgan’s first points of the year with a 24-yard sprint to the end zone on his team’s opening series.

Jeremy Strong added a 7-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter for the Rebels.

For Randolph, which advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals a year ago, quarterback William Mitchell accounted for all three touchdowns on a pair of 9-yard touchdown runs and 45-yard scoring pass to Roan Campbell with 1:16 remaining.

Key sequence: Trailing 13-7 early in the second quarter, Randolph coach David Lloyd elected to go for it with his offense facing a fourth-and-5 situation on the Raiders 28. The move backfired when Mitchell’s pass was intercepted by linebacker Ty Jones at the 36. Mosley out-ran the Randolph defender and hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Peters on West Morgan’s next play for a 20-7 lead.

Stat sheet: West Morgan – Mosley caught seven passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns. Fletcher had six receptions for 23 yards in addition to his 101 yards on the ground. Jones and Tyshon Tucker each intercepted a pass in the second quarter. Randolph – Mitchell was 15-of-21 passing for 172 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while running for 67 yards and two TDs. He attempted just six passes after halftime.

By the numbers: 220, total yardage in penalties. Randolph was whistled for 12 penalties for 120 yards while West Morgan was flagged 10 times for 100 yards. 40, the Rebels improved to 60-0 since 2000 in games in which they’ve scored 40 or more points. 32, the winning team has scored at least 32 points in all four meetings in this series, which is now tied at 2-2.

Coachspeak: “That was a great first win. Our goal is to take it one at a time and we have to improve each week. These guys should be proud over the weekend that they won, but we’ve got a lot of things we have got to fix.” – West Morgan coach Drew Phillips

They Said It: “This is something I’ve been working towards for a long time. You celebrate tomorrow and then you move on to the next game.” – Rebels senior quarterback Braxton Peters

What’s Next?: Randolph embarks on a three-game road swing, first to Class 3A No. 6 Madison Academy, followed by St. John Paul II and North Jackson. The Raiders’ next home game is Sept. 22 vs. Westminster Christian.
