Week 7 State Volleyball Player of the Week hit career milestone as a junior
Just over half of the 6,048 voters in the AL.com Week 7 State Volleyball Player of the Week poll chose the winner after she hit a career milestone in her junior season.
Madison County setter Addy Gustafson surpassed 2,000 assists for her career and collected 3,142 votes – 52 percent. The 5-foot-8 junior had 122 assists last week to go along with 51 digs as the Class 4A Tigers ran their record to 31-10.
Madison County dropped out of the No. 1 spot in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll this week as Prattville Christian at 32-12 took over atop the list. Madison County, now at 32-11, is now second as Alabama High School Athletic Association teams move into area tournament play beginning next week.
Mobile Christian’s Melaina Haines finished second in the Player of the Week survey with 1,625 votes, good for 27 percent of the total. The 5-10 junior setter pushed her career total kills total past 1,500 to 1,563 last week with 108. She also had 13 aces, 77 assists, 78 digs and eight blocks.
The Leopards held on to the top spot in 3A in the final ASWA poll, where they’ve been since the preseason list, are 28-7 on the season.
Hoover’s Olivia Gunster got 8 percent of the vote total to take third in the balloting. The senior outside hitter got 101 digs last week to go over 1,000 in her career. She also had 54 kills and 15 aces for the 7A Bucs, who beat No. 1 McGill-Toolen and lost to 6A No. 1 Montgomery Academy. Hoover is 31-7 and ranked third in the final poll.
