Week 13âs Cunningham Bounds Coastal top performer is repeat winner
The Week 13 Cunningham Bounds Football Player of the Week is this season’s first back-to-back winner. He is also the fourth weekly winner for Mobile Christian, but just the second player.
Sophomore Anthonio “PJ” Brown ran away with the poll, earning 92 percent of the 25,482 votes cast this week. The 5-foot-8, 158-pounder carried the ball 27 times for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the top-ranked Leopards’ 35-10 win over Houston Academy in last week’s second-round Class 3A playoffs.
Quarterback Damien Gatson was the Week 6 and Week 10 poll winner for Mobile Christian.
Undefeated Mobile Christian puts its 12-0 record on the line at home against Trinity (11-1) in Friday’s quarterfinal contest.
Gulf Shores running back Kolin Wilson picked up his 10th 100-yard game of the season last week as the Dolphins beat Charles Henderson 41-0. Wilson ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns and finished second in the poll.
The No. 1 Class 5A Dolphins (12-0) host Headland (10-2) on Friday in quarterfinal action.
Jackson freshman EJ Crowell finished third in the poll after running for 206 yards and a pair of TDs as the Aggies eliminated last season’s state champ Andalusia in Class 4A action.
Jackson (12-0) plays at Booker T. Washington (8-4) in Tuskegee on Friday in the 4A quarterfinals.
Voting for the Cunningham Bounds Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 13, more than 40,900 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
