Wednesday Baseball Roundup: Mobile Christian rolls past Tallassee; Alexandria, Sardis split
South Alabama commit Damien Gatson homered and drove in four total runs as Class 5A No. 9 Mobile Christian pounded out 20 hits and scored 20 runs in a 7-1, 13-1 quarterfinal sweep of Tallassee on Wednesday.
Mobile Christian (22-10) is now 6-0 in the playoffs and has outscored its three opponents 66-16. The Leopards have scored at least seven runs in each game and 13 or more in half of them.
In Game 1 on Wednesday, Gatson homered in a five-run first inning, and the Leopards didn’t look back.
They added single runs in the second and third innings for starting pitcher Zach McKinion. He pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out three. He didn’t walk a batter.
PJ Brown drove in three runs. Gatson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Gavin Weinshenker also had two hits. Brody Wisener had two hits for Tallassee. The Tigers used four pitchers in the game.
In the nightcap, Mobile Christian scored a run in the first and then five each in the second and third innings to pull away. The Leopards finished with 20 hits in the five-inning win. Tallassee (20-10) managed just three.
Walker Seaman and Reid Schmitz pitched for MCS. The Tigers used five pitchers.
Gatson, Bryce Rivers and Alex Bennett each had two hits and two RBIs for Jason Smith’s team. Chandler Carpenter was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Brown also had two RBIs.
The Leopards will play either Valley or Holtville in the semifinals next week.
CLASS 5A
Alexandria 4-1, Sardis 2-4
Host Sardis staved off elimination with 3 runs in the eighth inning of Game 2 in a battle of the top two ranked teams in Class 5A.
The deciding game will be played on Thursday at 6 p.m.
The two teams battled to a 1-all tie through seven innings in Game 2 before second-ranked Sardis (22-12) broke it open in the eighth.
Derek Tarvin started the scoring with an RBI-single before a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Two bases-loaded walks by Carson Gillian and Luke Martin added the final 2 runs.
Sardis’ Martin belted a run-scoring double for the first run of the game, but top-ranked Alexandria (26-9) tied the game 1-all in the fourth when Ian Cartwright stole home on a double steal.
Starter Conner Lowery struck out 2-of-3 batters in the eighth to preserve the victory. Lowery struck out 9 and allowed only 2 hits in the win.
Alexandria broke a scoreless Game 1 with 4 runs in the fourth. An RBI-double by Brayton Goode started the scoring before Aiden Brunner added a 2-run double followed by a run on a passed ball.
Brunner was 2-for-3 to lead the offense while Samuel Henager added a double.
Andrew Allen pitched the complete-game win, allowing seven hits with an earned run and striking out 4.
Sardis scored its 2 runs in the sixth inning on a wild pitch and error. Landon Carroll was 2-for-4 with a double for Sardis.
